In general, Zakat cannot be given to a person’s direct ascendants or direct descendants. This means you cannot give Zakat to:
The reason for this is that one is already financially responsible for their immediate family’s well-being, and Zakat is meant to assist those outside of one’s direct financial obligations.
Additionally, a husband cannot give Zakat to his wife, as he is Islamically obligated to provide for her needs. However, there is a difference of opinion among scholars on whether a wife can give Zakat to her husband. Some scholars permit it, especially if the husband is eligible to receive Zakat due to financial hardship.
Beyond these restrictions, Zakat may be given to any other family member who qualifies as a recipient, including siblings, uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews, and nieces, as long as they meet the criteria for Zakat eligibility.
