Do I have to give Zakat-al fitr directly to recipients?

The recipients of Zakat al-Fitr are the same as those eligible for regular Zakat, meaning that it is permissible to pay Zakat al-Fitr to any organization that collects and distributes Zakat in accordance with Islamic guidelines. As long as the funds reach those who qualify—such as the poor, the needy, and other eligible categories—it is valid to give through a trusted Zakat organization.

When deciding whether to give locally or internationally, the general preference in Islamic tradition is to distribute Zakat, including Zakat al-Fitr, within one’s local community. This ensures that those in immediate proximity who are struggling financially receive support, fostering social cohesion and uplifting those in need within one’s surroundings.

However, there are circumstances where sending Zakat al-Fitr abroad is justifiable. If there are communities in other parts of the world experiencing severe hardship, famine, conflict, or displacement, it is entirely permissible—and even encouraged—to direct Zakat to those most in need, regardless of location.
